Be seduced...

...by glamour from the past beneath iridescent chandeliers and by the alluring tastes of a master in gastronomy. Relax and let yourself be enticed by the mystery, beauty, and history of Sandefjord's most legendary property.

History

Aristotle Onassis, The Maharaja of Persia, Jussi Bjørling, and various kings, queens, princes, and princesses from European kingdoms are but some of the honored guests who shared a glass of wine with Anders Jahre at Midtåsen. For him Bordeaux was the most cherished wine and the one he knew more than a little about.

After the war, Anders Jahre became one of the world’s leading whale traders and one of Norway's most important entrepreneurs. Many people saw him as something of a king, and he was known as semi-royalty far beyond Scandinavia's borders.

In 1933, he built Midtåsen Mansion on the highest, and one of the most scenic, points in Sandefjord. He lived there until he died in 1982; his second wife, Bess Jahre, continued living in residence until she passed away in 2006. For the local population there has always been a mysterious, somewhat secretive atmosphere surrounding the place where Sandefjord's greatest man spent his days.

Anders Jahre did not seek publicity and never gave interviews to anyone. During his life, he donated a great deal of his wealth to his town, district, and country, resulting in his legacy as a great benefactor. This reputation continues today, thanks to the Anders Jahre Humanitarian Foundation. After his death, rumors swirled that some of his riches were unaccounted for and perhaps hidden somewhere at Midtåsen. Still the treasure hunt continues, searching for his hidden fortune…
